Interview with Janet Babar

Now, without further ado, please welcome Janet Babar to the interview~!!  She is one of the three designers who joined Aurora Wings' Design Team starting in April.  I will be bringing the interviews with the remaining two designers in the upcoming months.

Mitzi:  I think the first card I saw from you that was made with one of my digi's was "Bone Queen" that you submitted into Feb. 2014's FB group contest. Your take of it in shades of blue was so unexpected as most people see poppies and they usually think 'red'. I loved the beautiful paper and a bold use of black accents on that creation. How long have you been coloring/paper crafting and how did you get started?

Janet: Blue Himalayan Poppies are one of my favourite flowers,.
I met a wonderful lady when on holiday in Cuba in 2005.  Once when her and OH came to stay, she wanted to go to a craft shop as she had made cards for years.  She now designs craft CDs and I am on her DT. While in the craft shop she bought me some crafty stuff, gems papers, craft knife (which I still cannot use LOL), etc., and from then on I was hooked.

Mitzi: Your coloring and card-making skills are impressive. Do you have any secret (or not so known) skills that others don't know about?

Janet: Thank you for the compliment, Mitzi,  Any skill I have has come from practising especially with colouring I don't think I have any skill that any other crafters don't know about.  All I know is that my cards have changed beyond recognition from when I first started and are still changing as I learn new techniques.

Mitzi: Next question.  Do you have a neatly organized crafting space (That's what I'm guessing...) or do you craft anywhere inspiration strikes regardless of where you happen to be?

Janet: Ha ha, it is neat and tidy as long as I don't go in there.  Otherwise, it is a complete tip.  This photo was taken when it had just been painted and a new carpet fitted.

Mitzi: Wow!  Looks nice in there. Hehe.  Curious what it looks like when you've been busy in there...  OK, next question.  When you're not coloring and crafting, what do you enjoy doing?

Janet: Nothing !!  We live in a quite large house that was built in the 1700s, so there is always something that wants fixing apart from that I do like to go on holiday.

Mitzi: Haha.  Your house sounds romantic, but it does sound high maintemance. ^^;  Now, I have a few random questions for you, just for fun.  What is your favorite genre of movies?

Janet: Murder mysteries.

Mitzi:  I didn't know what to expect from you on that one.  Cool!  OK, continuing on the 'random fun' question... If you were to describe yourself as a single type of flower, what would you see yourself as?

Janet: Lily because it is tall, slim, and elegant just like I would love to be!

Mitzi: Lovely pick! Now getting back a little bit on track of discussing crafts, what is your favorite art/craft tool and why?

Janet: Alcohol pens (Copic, Promarker, Graph'it,  etc.) because I absolutely love colouring, oh, and my Ebosser for cutting dies and embossing because I nearly always put dies and/or embossing on my cards.

Mitzi:  I guess alcohol pens of one brand or another have been the favorite tools of everyone here so far.  No surprise.  OK, here's one of my favorite questions just for fun.   When you were little, what did you want to be when you grow up?

Janet: I always wanted to be a nurse, and that is what I did.

Mitzi: Awesome!  Last question. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you like to go visit?

Janet: We have travelled a lot to Europe and the Caribbean, and I have loved every place we have visited, but the one place I would travel to again if given chance would be the 1st place we ever went and that was an Island called Mali Losin, which is in Croatia (It was Yugoslavia when we visited.).

Interview with Donna Mundinger

Hi, everyone!  Mitzi here.  Welcome to the sixth and final installment of Designer Interview series before the first challenge announcment.  I'm so happy you can join us.  Today, I'm delighted to introduce to you Donna Mundinger.  Everyone, please meet Donna!

Mitzi: I recall the first card I saw from you that was made with one of my digi's was "Las Calaveras" (Sugar Skull Day of the Dead Catrina). You were one of the first people to join my FB group and to post a photo. I loved the traditional yellow and orange color scheme, and was thrilled to see the 3D effect. How long have you been coloring/paper crafting and how did you get started?

Donna:  I've always been a crafter, even as a little girl. My Daddy was always my big inspiration. He was a mechanical engineer by trade, but an accomplished "inventor" and artist at heart. During grade school he made gorgeous 3D Valentines for my teachers, I recall especially, a lamp post and wheelbarrow, and "built" many of my Halloween costumes. I began papercrafting in 2008 with the purchase of a Cricut die cutting machine. My husband and I were both retired and he had gotten heavily into the piano and thought I needed some sort of "hobby" too.  For several years I did mainly Cricut crafts and used Design Studio to "build" many layered, shaped cards.  Although I liked stamping, I sort of stunk at rubber stamping and was often discouraged when the the impression didn't come out perfectly.  Then came digi stamps and I was smitten.  Not only did they come out perfectly every time, they were resizeable.  WooHoo!  Copics are my coloring tools of choice, although I'd love to become more proficient with pencils and even watercolors, but I still have lots to learn with my markers.  I still prefer to add dimension to my digi cards, though.  I'm no good with sketches.  No imagination for my own, and I feel like I have to follow those of others exactly, which sort of stifles my creativity.  So most of my creations are shaped or layered or have some element of surprise.  I find fussy cutting by hand very relaxing.

Mitzi: That's fantastic that you and you father got to have so much fun together working on projects.  I'm also glad that you found digital stamps!  As an artist, I always thought the size limitation of the rubber stamps to be disappointing in the way they confined my larger fantasy pieces and robbed them of their details, so I was happy to offer my lines in this format, too. Glad our paths have crossed.
Next question.  You do a lot of crafting and are on a DT for multiple artists/companies. What does your crafting area/room look like? Do you keep the space pretty neat? Or are you someone who can work perfectly well in an organized chaos? (That's me.)

Donna: How embarrassing!  I just KNEW you were gonna ask that.  My craft room looks like a bomb went off and spills into the adjoining bathroom and exercise room.  I'd send you a pic, but I'd hate to totally incriminate myself.  LOL  I underestimated the amount of "stuff" I was going to accumulate and quickly filled every available inch of storage.  Now there are bags, boxes and piles EVERYWHERE.  My New Year's resolution every year is to "get organized" . HA! I'd probably have to stop crafting for a year and that's not gonna happen.  Unfortunately, this makes me a very inefficient crafter.  Sometimes I'll lay something down on my desk, turn away, and then not find it again for a half hour.  I tell myself to just put the stuff away after I finish a project, but my mind works way faster than my hands and I can't wait to get started on the next thing sooo... I manage.  They say admitting publicly that you have a problem is the first step to recovery.  What do you think?  Fortunately, somehow the rest of the house remains in a reasonable state.

Mitzi: Hehe, I feel as if I've found a kindred spirit!  I've panicked once, thinking I've lost an original painting overnight in my messy work area, only to find it in under my scanner lid, perfectly safe and sound.  LOL  Wasted about 15 minutes looking all over the place for it, falsely accusing my kitties and family members in the process.

Next question.  Aside from coloring and crafting, what other activities do you enjoy? 

Donna: I love gourmet cooking, wine and entertaining, decorating for the holidays (not taking the stuff down, though) and gardening.  I'm happiest when my rooms are filled with flowers and am thrilled that most of the time I don't have to go to the Farmer's Market to purchase them.   I just walk out my back door.  I'm also a regular hiker, doing 6 to 7 miles a day on the trails near our house.  Feel lucky to live in the Wine Country of the Livermore Valley in CA, as the views are spectacular.  I'm also refreshing my long neglected Spanish with Rosetta Stone and hope to regain the fluency I once had.

Mitzi: Fantastic!  Sounds lovely!  You're such an all-round awesome lady! :D  Now, onto the next question.   I know from your blog that you are a cat person. (Me, too!!) If you can choose to be an animal for a day, what would it be?  (I love asking this question.)

Donna: You know, if you'd not said "for a day", I would have probably said cat.  I love their independent nature, streak of wildness, affection and domesticity on their own terms, well pretty much everything about them.  But if it were only for a day, I guess I'd want to fly.  I walk past a red-tailed hawk's nest every day and I have to say, they're pretty awesome.  They say they mate for life, too...smile...

Mitzi: Wow, you get to walk past a hawk's nest every day?  How awesome is that!  It would be cool to be able to fly.  (And I'd enjoy looking and being so dignified, too.)   OK.  Next question.  You had a blog entry that showcased a wonderful Dia de los Muertos decorations celebrating and honoring your family. How long have you been doing it? Do you dress up with face paint, too?

Donna: I took Spanish in school for 13 years and was introduced to the celebration in 7th grade by my Spanish teacher Mrs. Parizek who brought in Pan de los Muertos for a treat.  YUMBO!  I still make it.  The whole personal celebration came much later.  I'm an only child and each of my parents was the last of their siblings to pass and I've inhereted most of the photos and keepsakes from both sides.  When decorating for a Halloween party ( gosh, maybe 10 years ago?) I decided to do my dining room in the Dia de los Muertos theme since I'd begun to collect traditional Mexican art like this beautiful Catrina.

 Building a giant ofrenda (altar) and filling it with family treasures became a labor of love and a way to keep memories alive.  I've been adding to it ever since and have participated in a Dia del los Muertos Blog Hop since 2010.  If you're interested in this, you can check out some of my blog posts.

I'm excited to add the project I did with your "Las Calaveras" digi next year.  Although I've never painted my face, it's always been one of my dreams.  Sorry to say, I'm not too handy with the makeup.  LOL 

Mitzi: That's so wonderful!  What a great way to honor your family and keeping the memories alive!  It kind of reminded me of my grandfather's Buddhist altar.  All my ancestors photos were on the wall near it, and offerings of incense, fresh flowers, and food were made daily.  It's a fond memory from my childhood when my grandmother would let the kids go fetch the food offering off the altar after an hour or so, and let us eat it.   

OK, this next one is a random question.  What is your favorite genre of movies?

Donna: I pretty much love all kinds of movies so it's easier to say what I DON'T like.  LOL  Not a big fan of the slapstick kind of comedies.  I love the romantic kind, however, and suspense, psychological thrillers, horror (not necessarily the slasher type, but demonic posession, etc. is good), period pieces, and fantasy.

Mitzi: Hehe, I totally get you there.  And the next question is something I ask everyone.  What is your favorite art tool and why?

Donna: A year ago I would say my Cricut, which is how I got started in papercrafting and how many of my followers know me.  However, I got a bit burned out with that and now am fully enjoying coloring with Copics and working towards improving on that front.

Mitzi: Awesome!  The next question is the one I love asking all my DT ladies.   When you were little, what did you want to be when you grow up? 

Donna: At 3 or 4 I wanted to be a nurse.  Even had a little nurse outfit, medical bag and rolling cart to play with.  (Back then, girls really didn't dream of being doctors)  However, I soon realized nurses gave shots which pretty much blew that out of the water.  I still can't look at injections, even on TV, although I no longer scream, cry and lock myself in my room when I need to get one. 

Mitzi: Aww, you must have looked so adorable!  Last question. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you like to go visit?

Donna: I toured all over Europe with my high school choir and enjoyed many places, as well as a trip to Bermuda with a high school boyfriend's family.  Since I've been married, our favorite trips out of the country have been all over Canada and we had a once in a lifetime trip to Bali that I'll never forget.  However, travel has become increasingly stressfull and unpleasant since 9/11 and unless I could be beamed to the destination, I'd prefer to stay home.  My hubby is really a home body so getting him to go anywhere is like pulling teeth.  We're now more the drive for a couple days away kind of travelers and fortunately that's easy to do in CA.  If I could go on my own though, I think Australia would be fun and I could visit some of my teamies and bloggie buddies.

Mitzi: Tighter security measures at the airports (plus crimes and political unrest in many parts of the world) definitely made international travel more stressful and unpleasant for sure.  It would be so cool for all of us to get together in Australia (or somewhere) some day, though! :D

Interview with Lorraine Craig Mackie

Hi, everyone!  Mitzi again, as your host. Welcome to the 4th installment of my Designer Interviews.  I'm glad you can join us. :D  Today, I'd like to introduce you to Lorraine Craig Mackie.  Everyone, please meet, Lorraine!

Mitzi: I remember that the first card I saw from you that was made with one of my digi's was "Shades of Blue" (Orchid Fairy with Detailed Butterfly Wings), which got me so excited. I loved the monochromatic coloring in shades of grey, with beautifully subtle rainbow colors in the wings. And with the embellishment you gave to the card, the overall visual impact was breathtaking - opulent and elegant. I've read that you've been coloring/paper crafting for about 7 years. How did you get started?

Lorraine: I came into crafting seven years ago when my mother who was already an avid paper crafter introduced me to it. Crafting and in particular paper crafting is a brilliant way to lose yourself, I often sit at my desk to colour an image for example and look up at the clock only to find that its the early hours of the morning.

Mitzi: I also remember when I saw your cover photo on FB of your work space. I recall I had one of those jaw-dropping moments (followed probably by a drool...). It's every crafter's dream space! How long have you had that awesome setup? And about how much time, on average, do you get to spend there every day?

Lorraine: Oh, that's lovely of you to say so, Mitzi. My little craft area or as I call it "my crafty haven" is where I've been crafting now for 4years, before that I crafted at our dining table which really wasn't very practical, so I decided to get rid of the table, get a desk and what was our dining room has now become "my crafty haven." lol

Mitzi: My humble art studio became a nursery, then my child's room. ^^; I'll just have to build an addition to the house to reclaim my studio space. Next question. When you're not coloring and crafting, what do you enjoy doing?

Lorraine: When I'm not crafting I like to read mostly crime novels, I love to listen to music, spend a little time in the garden and go for walks either along the beach or in the surrounding countryside.

Mitzi: My gosh, how lovely! *jealous of walks along the beach* Your wonderful attention to detail probably got a good start when you picked up crocheting, knitting, and embroidery, as you mention in your bio. What is the biggest, or the most time-consuming, project you've ever tackled in one of these types of crafts?

Lorraine: Hmmm, I would have to say the most time consuming project I've ever tackled was the lace doily dressing table set that I crocheted for my Grandmother when I was about 11 or 12 years old....The crochet hook was so small and the thread was so fine....my Grandmother was so thrilled with them and they had pride of place on her dresser until she died only a few years ago.

Mitzi: What a lovely story! I just knew you would be the type of person who had the patience to complete a very demanding project even at a young age. Next question. Are you a cat person or a dog person? (Random, I know. But a crazy cat lady must ask this every time she interviews someone.)

Lorraine: I love all animals really but I adore cats both domestic and big cats.

Mitzi: Moving right along, but the next question is just as random. Do you like ethnic food? If so, what is your favorite dish?

Lorraine: I prefer plain & simple dishes, but I do like to try most foods... I'm not a lover of hot and spicy dishes like vindaloo or chilli's but I do like some aromatic dishes like a creamy Korma or stir fry's.

Mitzi: You sound a little like me. I was raised on a very traditional (everyday stuff, nothing fancy, but almost exclusively of whole food and healthy) Japanese diet, but am totally adventurous when I have the opportunity to try something new and different. I'd try any food at least once ... or a bite (may spit it out later lol). OK. Next question. What is your favorite art tool and why?

Lorraine: This is an easy question. My colouring tools (you see how I got around that one lol), namely my alcohol pens and my pencils.

Mitzi: And you use them with such grace on your projects! They love you. ^^ Now just for fun, when you were little, what did you want to be when you grow up? Everyone gets asked this question, too. ;)

Lorraine: I wanted to be a hairdresser/stylist and when I left school that's what I trained to be.

Mitzi: With what I've seen you do with paper crafts, I bet you were an extraordinary hair wizard! :D Last question. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you like to go visit?

Lorraine: Now this is another tricky question.... Hmm let me think... well, up until only a few years ago, I would have said I would have loved to go Island hopping around the Greek Islands, but now that I'm an avid crafter I would have to say that I would love to go to the CHA* in America. *Craft & Hobby Association - Their big convention takes place in Anaheim, CA, but they also have events in other locations.

Mitzi: Their convention would be fun to attend! :D I'd love to go there some day, too. Hehe, maybe someday, we'll be hugely successful and we'll all be there. That would be so fun, wouldn't it? Interview with Sandra Carey

Welcome to the Designer Interview #3!  Once again, I'm your host, Mitzi. *waves*  I'm so glad you can join us!  Today, I'll be introducing you to Sandra Carey.  Please welcome, Sandra!

Mitzi: I think the first card I saw from you that was made with one of my digi's was "Las Calaveras" (Sugar Skull Day of the Dead Catrina), which made a huge impression on me. I loved the monochromatic color scheme you chose and all the embellishment that you made the card with. The visual impact was complex, yet inviting. How long have you been coloring/paper crafting and how did you get started?

Sandra: Yes, that was the first card I made with one of your Digis and fell in love with them all. I have only been colouring for about a year and still have a lot to learn.I started cardmaking quite a few years ago when i made one for a friend, and haven't stopped. I love all types of arts and crafts, and did art as part of my GCSE's* as growing up, but was not able to follow my dreams . I love to colour with my son who is also doing art GCSE's and also A levels next year .
*General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is an academic qualification awarded in a specified subject, generally taken in a number of subjects by students aged 14-16 in secondary education in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Mitzi: That's awesome!  Talent for art runs in your family.  Next question.  Some people find a layout or a style that works particularly well for them and stick with it. In your work, I see a delightful creativity that is fluid and not fixed or static. Each of your projects is distinctly different, yet all are so well done. This gives me the impression that you are one of those people who are good at most everything they try their hands at. Do you have some skills that you excell at that not very many people know about?

Sandra: When you apply for a design team, they often ask about your style, I and I always say I don't have one particular style. I always go with how the image makes me feel which I think puts people off but I do like to try my hand at different things even if it does not go to plan.

Mitzi: No style, or maybe it's better described as 'versatile'. :D I always admire this quality in people when I see it! I've noticed that you are very good at focusing in on one aspect of an image and expand that into the overall design theme. You certainly have a wonderful knack for it. Next question. When you're not coloring and crafting, what do you enjoy doing?

Sandra: This is going to sound a bit strange, but I love to work alongside my Hubby in the garage as a mechanic. We love to fix old Volkswagen's, and I also love photography.

Mitzi: I love it! (The 'hidden talent' question she dodged gets answered here, too! lol) It is an unexpected answer perhaps, but delightful! It's always great for a couple to have a hobby/activity they can do together. ^^ How cool is that!! OK. Next question. I saw on your FB profile that you're a fan of Miami Ink (I'm a big fan, too!). Do you have any tattoos on you? Or maybe you're like me -- just adore the art form, think that the people who make them and have them are fascinating, but do not have them on themselves?

Sandra: I am a big fan of tattoo art, and I do have a tattoo. It took me along time to pluck up the courage to have one, though am not a fan of pain! lol

Mitzi: Awesome! Thanks for letting us take a peek at your lovely tattoo! I love to design tattoos for clients, but I have none on me. Part of my problem is that I cannot seem to settle on one definitive design choice... I may be sticking with Sharpie tattoos. lol OK, next question.  What is your favorite genre of movies? (random)

Sandra: I like to watch action /thrillers, but don't do horrors.

Mitzi: If you can choose to be any animal for a day, what would it be? (random again!)

Sandra: Gosh, animal for a day would have to be something that gets plenty of rest as I don't get much.

Mitzi: May I suggest a cuddley sloth as your choice then? XD Or a newborn kitten.

*squee* OK.  Moving onto the next question.   What is your favorite art tool and why?

Sandra: It would be my pens as find colouring so relaxing .

Mitzi: Just for fun, when you were little, what did you want to be when you grow up?

Sandra: I wanted to be a nurse and did EMI* nursing for a long time until I had my first child. *EMI = Elderly Mentally Infirm

Mitzi: I always ask this question to see how different what you wanted to be and what you are.  In your case, you got to be what you wanted to be as a child.  That's awesome, Sandra!  Here's my last question. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you like to go visit?

Sandra: I have always wanted to visit Germany, and am hoping to get there in the next couple of years.

Mitzi: I am not surprised by your answer after seeing your restored VW photos and can just imagine where you guys might be visiting and what you'll be doing in Germany. XD That will be great fun for you! Thank you so much for your time with this interview, Sandra! It was fun getting to know you.
